10 years ago, near the Isola dei Conigli, hundreds of corpses emerged. 368 victims were counted.![]()
In 2016, following the tragedy, the Italian Parliament established the 'National Day in Memory of the Victims of Immigration' on 3 October, to emphasise how we must work to prevent further massacres.
Since then, more than 27,000 people lost their lives trying to enter Europe by crossing the Mediterranean, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to escape from wars and persecution.
A massacre that can be stopped provided governments set up a European search and rescue programme and introduce legal and safe channels of access for seeking work and protection.![]()
The last ten years have confirmed what we already knew: the EU's migration policies are an example of necropolitics. For member states, 'migrants', those who 'have no right' to live in the EU, can be put to death and no one is held responsible.
On 3 October 2023, we want to remember those innocent deaths and the responsibilities of governments and the European Commission in determining the conditions for the slaughter to continue.![]()
